Volunteering and Virtus

Dear Parents,

Volunteers are an extremely important part of our St. Joseph School community.  Many parents have already met the specific requirements for volunteers as set forth by the Diocese of Cleveland.  Every parish volunteer 18 years of age and older who has any contact or access to children and volunteers four or more hours per month or more than once per month are required to do the following:

  1. Go online to www.dioceseofcleveland.org and read the Policy for the Safety of Children in Matters of Sexual Abuse, revised 2007.  Sign the acknowledgment form and submit it to the school office.
  2. Complete the application (available in the school office) that provides information and references.
  3. Attend a three-hour training session and complete a one-year internet-based child abuse tutorial.
  4. Complete a background check through the State of Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation for those who have been an Ohio resident for the last five years and an FBI background check for those who have not been an Ohio resident for the last five years.
  5. Go online to www.dioceseofcleveland.org and read the Standard of Conduct for Ministry.  Sign the acknowledgment form and submit it to the school office.

To find the "policy" and "conduct" forms, go to www.dioceseofcleveland.org.  Click on Child Protection under "Diocesan Initiatives."  On the left-had side of the page, click on "Documents and Policies."  Follow the links to read the policies and get the forms, which are at the end of the informational section of each policy.

To find training session times and locations go to www.dioceseofcleveland.org.  Click on Child Protection under "Diocesan Initiatives."  On the left-had side of the page, click on "VIRTUS."  Follow the registration link.  When you attend a training session, you will be given a certificate of completion.  Please bring that to the school office.  We will make a copy and return the original to you.  To register for a training session, you may follow the above link or log on to www.virtus.org and click on the highlighted word “registration” on the left-hand side of the page.  Follow the directions to complete your registration.

At some of the sessions you may be given the chance to have your background check done at the same time.  We ask that you pay for this service at the time it is rendered.  When you are mailed the results, bring them to the school office.  If you are not given the opportunity to have your fingerprinting done at the time of your training, you may have this done at the license bureau.

After all of your paper work is submitted, please bring it to the school office.  Your information will be entered into the Diocesan data base.  A badge will then be made for you to wear anytime you are volunteering.

Please plan ahead!  If you want to volunteer for 6th grade camp, field trips, cafeteria duty, picture day, etc., or coach sports, please don’t wait for the last possible moment to be VIRTUS trained.

We thank you for your continued cooperation and may God bless you for the time and talents you are so willing to share with the children of St. Joseph School.

Sincerely,
Deacon Kochanski
Mrs. Csejtey
