St. Nicholas was a Bishop who lived in the 4th Century in Myra, in modern day Turkey.  Nicholas was a very rich man, but was also very kind, always looking to help those in need. There is a story about Nicholas that starts with a very poor man with three daughters that he could not support. After hearing about their struggles, one night, Nicholas secretly dropped a bag of gold down the chimney and into the house, which fell into a stocking that had been hung by the fire to dry! The man discovered Nicholas, but Nicholas begged the man to not tell anyone what he had done. However, word spread throughout the town, and Nicholas developed a reputation for helping the poor and giving secret gifts to people who needed it. He went on to become a Bishop and defender of the Church, but he is most known in the world for bringing joy to children!
